the bowl, the buzz, the bleach and the jennifer aniston

growing up, my mom wouldn't let me get a perm. in fact, i had the same haircut from age 3 to age 20. a short bob with straight across bangs. i remember my friend traci curling, poofing, ratting and spraying my bangs in 4th grade for the first time and i thought i was thee coolest. but, looking back at my childhood photos vs. pretty much everyone else's childhood photos, i'm actually glad my mom kept things simple. the 80's and 90's we're good for a lot of things but hair wasn't one of them. so anyways, i have always wanted a perm. don't worry, i wont ever get one. but something deep inside of me really wants one and i can relate to my 6 year old self again. i mean, even sara kray has one, mom! yes, the same sara kray who needed to wipe her nose all the time and told me i had dirty blond hair and made me cry (it wasn't until years later that i realized dirty blond hair doesn't mean your hair is actually ridden with crud.) this cell phone photo is the closest i'll ever get to a perm. courtesy of my show last semester and a few hours of curlers. i lived the dream that day i tell you, lived the dream.

take that sara kray.

oh kate. thank your lucky stars you didn't get perms. the damage on hair. yikes. i think my hair died even more just thinking about having one again.

in one week i colored my hair. stripped my hair (horrible color) and then permed it. it's amazing i had any hair for the remainder of my sophomore year.

I got a perm when I was 12, and it never came out! I still have curly hair! I still haven't decided if that's a good thing.

I love you with curls though!

Kate, I totally remember that day. Actually you didn't even know how to use a curling iron... you held it backwards and would kink your hair. Those were the good old days of scroungy hair and clothes, football and tree forts. Ha!

my mom gave my sisters and me perms until i was like 10 years old and we hated it! haha and you're right--80s/90s was pretty bad in fashion all around! cute pic! :)

oh my goodness that's awesome!

My mom definitely went all out on us girls. I don't even know how she got our hair that big.

I always wanted a perm, too. My mom had one until the late 90s but she REFUSED to let me get one, even when I begged.
I still wish for curly hair now and again, but I'm forever grateful she stood strong.

i love the curls. you look adorable!

my mother also protected me from most of the hair woes of the 90's. we have such good mamas.

Girl, I LOVE my perm. But yeah, it sure does a number on your hair. No amount of hot oil treatments can fully restore mine. I have to leave it alone and let it grow for ten years or so to repair it.

that photo is a treasure. i got a perm in second grade, and somehow it lasted for a good two years... those were sad days and i was NOT cute!

it suits you.
oh and I had a perm, many of them, never by choice, and believe me I would have much preferred the simple school photos you are so lucky to have ;)

i wish retro styles would come back. A. because they made people look more put-together, and B. because i have really frizzy hair not suited for today's styles. you clearly need to cut your hair and get a perm. look at that picture! come on.
